Eastern Kentucky University, public, coeducational institution of higher learning in Richmond, Kentucky, U.S. The university offers an undergraduate curriculum in the arts, sciences, business, education, allied health professions, and law enforcement; it also offers master’s degree programs in most of these areas. Doctoral programs are offered jointly with cooperating institutions. Total enrollment is approximately 16,000.
The university was established as Eastern Kentucky State Normal School by the state legislature in 1906 and instruction began the same year. The school became a four-year, degree-granting teachers college in 1922, awarding its first degrees three years later. Graduate classes were first offered in 1935. The name was changed to Eastern Kentucky State College in 1948, and in 1966 the school was elevated to university status.
