George Smiley
George Smiley, fictional character, a British secret service agent who appears in many of the spy stories of John le Carré, beginning with Call for the Dead (1961).
Smiley is an unobtrusive secret agent who leads an unglamorous life. A deceptively bland middle-aged man, he is trusted and respected by his subordinates and colleagues. He occasionally clashes with the intelligence bureaucracy and sometimes feels that professional duty compromises his personal honour. His most formidable adversary is a Soviet master spy, Karla.
In the detective story A Murder of Quality (1962), Smiley, having resigned from the secret service, investigates the murder of a schoolmaster’s wife. He returns to the secret service, playing a minor role in The Spy Who Came In from the Cold (1963) and in The Looking-Glass War (1965). He is a central character in Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy (1974), The Honourable Schoolboy (1977), Smiley’s People (1980), and The Secret Pilgrim (1991).
