Ramsay family, fictional characters, the protagonists of Virginia Woolf’s experimental novel To the Lighthouse (1927).

Based partly on Woolf’s father, Sir Leslie Stephen, Mr. Ramsay is a philosophy professor who is esteemed by his students as an inspiring intellect but is disliked by his eight children because of his sarcastic wit and faultfinding. Mrs. Ramsay, the prototypical nurturing mother and wife, is the emotional centre of the book. Even after her death, she lives on as an influence on her children and friends and on the summer home on the Isle of Skye in Scotland that is the setting for the novel. Among the children are James, the youngest and his mother’s favourite; Camilla, called Cam; Prue, who later dies after childbirth; and Andrew, who dies in France during World War I.
