The Town, novel by Conrad Richter, published in 1950. The third book in a trilogy that includes The Trees and The Fields, The Town was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1951. The three books were published in a single volume as The Awakening Land in 1966.
The trilogy, which is set in the Ohio River valley in the late 18th- through mid-19th century, offers a realistic portrayal of frontier life as it chronicles the changes wrought in the wilderness by human habitation. The Town presents the end of the life of the trilogy’s pioneer protagonist, Sayward Luckett Wheeler.
