This is a list in chronological order of National Medal of Arts recipients. The National Medal of Arts, established in 1984, is typically awarded annually by the U.S. president to
individuals or groups who in the President’s judgment are deserving of special recognition by reason of their outstanding contributions to the excellence, growth, support, and availability of the arts in the United States.
No medals were awarded from 2016 through 2018. The U.S. president may award up to 12 medals each year. See also National Endowment for the Arts.
