ED HERLIHY: The largest World Series crowd ever fills the huge Los Angeles Coliseum for the first World Series game ever played on the West Coast--over 92,000 cash customers. On the field the White Sox have the bases full, first inning.
But Don Drysdale pitches himself out of trouble. Goodman grounds out, ending the inning. It's a pitching duel from there on 'til Hodges walks to fill the bases in the seventh. Staley is pitching, relief for Donovan. Furillo pinch hitting, and he wraps a sharp grounder. It bounces past Aparicio for a single. Two runs cross the plate for the Dodgers, and the scoreless tie is broken.
It's Sherry to the rescue for L.A. when the Sox load the sacks in the eighth with nobody out. Al Smith batting. Smith grounds to Wills, and the Dodgers force the rally with a double play, even though one man scores.
Ice cold Sherry does it again for the Angelinos, striking out the side in the ninth. Dodgers, after that disastrous opening game, have roared back in this series. Maybe it's that refreshing Pacific air they breathe.
