NARRATOR: Today the descendants of the Indians who first settled the sparse grasslands of Bolivia and Peru raise sheep in addition to native species, such as the alpaca.

But because alpacas evolved in this cold climate, they grow thicker wool.

The early Inca learned to weave the fleece of the alpacas, and the ancient drop spindle is still used to make some of the finest wool in the world.
