NARRATOR: The western mountain slopes and valleys of Olympic National Park, in northwestern Washington, are covered with a temperate rainforest.

The mild coastal climate, frequent fog, and heavy annual rainfall support the dense growth of Douglas fir, western red cedar, hemlock, and Sitka spruce. These trees grow to great heights, draped in mosses and vines and surrounded at their bases by large ferns.
