Sochi is a city of over 300,000 people on the northeast coast of the Black Sea, at the western end of the Caucasus Mountains. Russians have enjoyed Sochi as a warm, subtropical resort since before Soviet times. The city is still popular for its watersports and beaches. Sochi features art galleries and other cultural attractions.
In 2007, Sochi was chosen as home to the 2014 Winter Olympics. Sochi's access to the nearby Caucasus makes it a unique tourist center. The mountains have the slopes and snow essential to winter downhill sports. Meanwhile, Sochi itself offers a comfortable indoor home for the ice games.
