'A lot more Man Utd can improve' says Le Tissier Nov. 17, 2024, 4:23 AM ET (BBC)

Maya Le Tissier (born April 18, 2002, Guernsey, Channel Islands) English football (soccer) player in the Women’s Super League (WSL) and member of the England women’s national team. From 2022, Le Tissier has played for WSL team Manchester United.

Le Tissier began playing football at a young age. Her father coached St. Martin’s AC, a local boys’ club in Guernsey, which she eventually joined, since there were no girls’ football teams on the island at the time. When she was 11, after traveling to Southampton, England, for a match with Guernsey’s boys’ team, she gained a spot on a girls’ team in Hampshire and started flying there twice a month to train and play. The logistics of travel and school, however, caused her to miss training sessions and matches, and eventually she had to stop playing for Hampshire. Shortly thereafter, Le Tissier was invited to play at England’s South West Regional Camp, which was developed for players who lacked access to a local club. There, her abilities were recognized, and she eventually was chosen to captain the England under-15 women’s national team.

In 2018 Le Tissier became the first female to play for the Guernsey under-16 boys’ squad in the Muratti Vase (an annual football competition for teams representing the three Channel Islands). That same year she joined Brighton & Hove Albion’s youth football club and was named captain of the Young Lionesses, England’s women’s under-17 football team. The squad qualified for the 2019 UEFA (Union of European Football Associations) Women’s Under-17 Championship in Bulgaria, with Le Tissier starting all three matches the team played.

In December 2018 Le Tissier debuted as a defender with the senior Brighton & Hove Albion team; the squad won the match 5–1, defeating Crystal Palace. Just four days later she made her WSL debut in a match against Chelsea. Le Tissier moved up to the England women’s under-19 football team in 2020, while continuing to play for Brighton. For 2020–21 she was named Brighton Women’s Young Player of the Season. In 2021 the football news website Goal ranked her in the top 10 on its NXGN list of best young football players in the world. The following year she signed a three-year contract with Manchester United, and in 2024 it was extended for four more years.
