Robert Pattinson (born May 13, 1986, London, England) is an English actor who became a celebrity for his role as the dreamy vampire Edward Cullen in the Twilight Saga movie series (2008–12) before later establishing his bona fides as a serious actor in independent films, notably Cosmopolis (2012), Good Time (2017), and The Lighthouse (2019).

Early life and career

Pattinson grew up in Barnes, a wealthy district in southwest London. His father was a car dealer and his mother worked for a modeling agency, and they encouraged his early interest in the arts. At a young age he developed a love for music, learning both the piano and guitar, and initially aspired to be a musician. He participated in school plays as a kid, but it was not until his teenage years that he started pursuing acting by joining a local drama club, the Barnes Theatre Company.

Pattinson soon began to audition for professional roles and made his on-screen debut with a supporting part in the made-for-television movie Ring of the Nibelungs (2004). The same year he also played a small role in Mira Nair’s Vanity Fair (2004), though his scene was cut from the final release. He was considering attending university to study politics when he landed his breakout role, as Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005). After that brush with big-time moviemaking, however, he spent the next few years playing roles in little-seen independent and television movies, including The Haunted Airman (2006) and The Bad Mother’s Handbook (2007), while playing in a rock band on the side.

Twilight and stardom

In 2008 Pattinson rose to stardom as Edward Cullen in Twilight (2008), the first in a string of films based on author Stephenie Meyer’s young adult book series of the same name. He acted in all four sequels as well: New Moon (2009), Eclipse (2010), Breaking Dawn—Part 1 (2011), and Breaking Dawn—Part 2 (2012). The movies became a major pop culture sensation, and Pattinson’s profile rose even further as his romantic relationship with his costar in the films, Kristen Stewart, was constantly publicized in the media. He received more notice for his looks than his acting skills in the films, and, of his performance in the series, Pattinson joked at the time that his “hair was 75 percent of it.”

Good Time, The Lighthouse, and The Batman

Instead of continuing on the path of the heartthrob star of big-budget franchise films, Pattinson took a creative left turn after the conclusion of the Twilight Saga. In 2012 he teamed with director David Cronenberg on Cosmopolis, an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Don DeLillo. He earned praise for his roles in David Michôd’s futuristic western The Rover (2014), Werner Herzog’s Queen of the Desert (2015), Brady Corbet’s directorial debut, The Childhood of a Leader (2015), and Claire Denis’s High Life (2018). Pattinson received particular acclaim for his visceral, charismatic portrayals of an out-of-control petty thief in the Safdie brothers’ thriller Good Time (2017) and an unhinged apprentice lighthouse keeper in Roger Eggers’s The Lighthouse (2019), both of which earned him Independent Spirit Award nominations for best male lead.

Pattinson made his return to mainstream movies in 2020, starring alongside John David Washington in Christopher Nolan’s mind-bending sci-fi film Tenet (2020). Other major projects include his turn as the titular superhero of Matt Reeves’s The Batman (2022), a casting choice that was initially decried by fans but praised once the film was released. Pattinson made his debut as a voice actor as the heron in the English dub of Hayao Miyazaki’s Oscar-winning film The Boy and the Heron (2023).

Personal life

Following the tabloid frenzy around his and Stewart’s romance, Pattinson has become known for keeping his personal life as private as possible and has admitted to making up stories in interviews. In the 2010s he dated singer-songwriter FKA Twigs before beginning a relationship with model Suki Waterhouse in 2018. Pattinson and Waterhouse were reportedly engaged in December 2023, and the pair welcomed their first child together in early 2024.
