- Shakespeare's acting company built a theatre outside the city limits after a London council began licensing plays that were performed in the yards of inns or on street corners, where the company used to perform.
- The first public theatres in London were built in the late 1500s on the outer districts of the city, since they were not allowed within London itself. The Globe was built in Southwark, a particularly disreputable outer district.
