1Pres. Alpha Condé was deposed in a military coup on September 5, 2021. A military junta, named the National Committee for Rally and Development (Comité National du Rassemblement pour le Développement; CNRD) and led by Col. Mamady Doumbouya, assumed control, suspended the constitution, and dissolved government institutions. A transitional charter, presented on September 27, outlined how the country would be governed until elections could be held to restore civilian rule. Under the charter Doumbouya would retain his role as head of the CNRD, while also assuming the position of president of the transitional government and chief of the armed forces; he would also appoint a civilian prime minister to serve as head of government. An 81-member National Transitional Council (Conseil National de la Transition) would serve as a legislative body. Col. Doumbouya was sworn in as president on October 1; he appointed Mohamed Béavoguia prime minister on October 6. Béavoguia was temporarily replaced by Bernard Gomou on July 16, 2022; Gomou officially succeeded Béavoguia on August 20, and Gomou was succeeded by Mamadou Oury Bah on February 27, 2024. |
