ONE GOOD FACT

Gutzon Borglum planned a massive Hall of Records as part of his Mount Rushmore design. The 80-by-100-foot room was to be drilled directly into the rock and would have housed historical documents like the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. Congress eventually directed him to abandon the hall and stick with the faces. A 70-foot tunnel remains hidden behind Lincoln’s head containing 16 enamel panels telling the story of Mount Rushmore. This area is not open to the public.
