Thomas Jefferson’s initial draft of the Declaration of Independence included a passage scolding King George III for his role in propagating slavery in America, taking “a distant people who never offended him, captivating & carrying them into slavery in another hemisphere.” People who benefited from slavery had this section removed from the final document.
