Lake Guier
lake, Senegal
- French:
- Lac de Guier
Lake Guier, lake, northwestern Senegal. It is situated 40 miles (64 km) east of the city of Saint-Louis. Lake Guier is fed by the Bounoum (Ferlo) tributary from the south and empties into the Sénégal River to the north. Its water is fresh, and a dam, built in 1916, prevents salt from entering the lake from the Taoué River and the Sénégal River delta. There are, nevertheless, salt licks used by the pastoral population of the vicinity. Since 1931, Lake Guier’s water has been used for irrigation; however, the waters have receded in recent years.
