Saint Lucia Game Reserve, sanctuary on the northeastern coast of KwaZulu/Natal province, South Africa. It encompasses Lake St. Lucia, a shallow, H-shaped lagoon and estuary system. Established in 1897, the reserve has an area of 142 square miles (368 square km). It is subtropical and is noted for its lush vegetation, including a variety of wild orchid and the flower-bearing Barringtonia tree. There are hundreds of species of birds, as well as crocodiles, hippopotamuses, leguans, and mongooses. Headquarters are at Mtubatuba.
