Savernake Forest, forest of beech covering about 4,000 ac (1,600 ha) on the chalk Downs in the county of Wiltshire, England. From the Norman Conquest (1066) until 1550 it was a major British royal hunting ground.
In 1939 the woodland was leased to the state Forestry Commission. During World War II U.S. forces were encamped in Savernake Forest before the Normandy Invasion.
