box lacrosse, game, a variant of lacrosse played principally in Canada during the spring and autumn and occasionally during the summer. There are 6 players on a side instead of the usual 10 (men) or 12 (women). Maximum field dimensions are 200 by 90 feet (about 60 by 27 m), with a goal 4 1/2 feet (about 140 cm) square. The game was devised in Canada to facilitate indoor play in areas such as hockey arenas, and it was recognized by the Canadian Lacrosse Association in 1932. A game with 7 players on a side, mainly for indoor play, was introduced in the 1960s.
