Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, public, coeducational institution of higher learning in Edinboro, Pennsylvania, U.S. It is one of 14 universities in Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education. The university includes the schools of Liberal Arts, Education, and Science, Management, and Technologies. In addition to undergraduate studies, the university offers a number of master’s degree programs. The Porreco Extension Center in Erie offers continuing education courses. Total enrollment is approximately 7,100.
The university traces its origins to 1856, to the privately owned Edinboro Academy that was one of the first institutions in the state dedicated to training teachers. It received a charter as a state normal (teacher-training) school in 1861. The commonwealth of Pennsylvania purchased the school in 1914. The college was elevated to university status in 1983.
