The Open Boat, short story by Stephen Crane, published in the collection The Open Boat and Other Tales of Adventure in 1898. It recounts the efforts of four survivors of a shipwreck—a newspaper correspondent and the ship’s cook, captain, and oiler—as they attempt to remain afloat in a dinghy on rough seas. Told from a shifting point of view, the narrative reveals nature’s indifference.
